The Government does not directly provide solar street lights to the States. However, the Government is providing a subsidy of 30% of the project cost subject to a maximum of Rs.81/- per watt peak for installation of solar street lights in the General Category States in the country. In the Special Category States viz. North-Eastern States, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim and Uttarakhand, subsidy of 90% of the project cost subject to a maximum of Rs.243/- per watt peak can be accessed by Central and State Government Ministries, Departments and their organisations, State Nodal Agencies and local bodies for installation of solar street lights.
During 20011-12, Government released to States Renewable Energy Development Agencies an amount of Rs.18.33 crores for installation of 71,997 nos. solar street lights in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
